A message for your parents….
Pass this on:
—-
This message goes out to all of the parents who are my age (you were late 80s to mid 90s teenagers). I am your kids’ online aunt or big sister. Stop working so hard for your damned luxury crap on high-interest loan or dieting so hard so that you are noticed. If you are poor, make as much time between work shifts as you can to be understanding. Don’t take your anger out on them. Therapists can’t fix everything. LISTEN to your kids and TALK TO THEM honestly about drugs, alcohol, sex and body image. When they look sad and lost, they probably are…
Just like we were, remember….?
Wait.
You were the little princesses and dudes teasing me about being too smart or disabled or skinny and single. You could have even been the shy person who was on the other side of the school grounds, looking down when I waved from the library steps. The kid from another country who was struggling to fit in too? It doesn’t matter… because I still love you, now go and hug your kid right now (and maybe they will come out of their room).

You’re welcome, my adopted young adults.
